White Noise Movie Effect

Summary:
I always thought the effect in the movie "White Noise" was pretty neat (and creepy). I thought I would create a photoshop tutorial that would show how to create an effect that is similar to the one in the movie.

Step-By-Step Instructions:
1. Open a photograph of your subject in Photoshop.



2. Goto Image > Adjustments > Desaturate. (This turns the photo into Black & White).



3. Goto Filter > Add Noise. Set Amount to something high such as 60. Check Uniform and Monochromatic.



4. Click Ctrl+A to select the entire canvas.
5. Click Ctrl+C to copy the image.
6. Open another photo of a Television in Photoshop.



7. Click Ctrl+V to paste the static photograph onto a new layer over the television set layer.
8. With the static photograph layer active, click Ctrl+T to enter Free Transform mode.
9. Adjust the shape handles to fit over the television.



10. Click the "Eye" icon next to the static photograph layer to hide it.
11. Click the "Television" layer so that it is active.
12. Select the Magic Wand tool and click the white area inside the television.



13. Click the "Eye" icon next to the static photograph layer to unhide it.
14. Make sure the static photograph layer is active.
15. Goto Select > Inverse.
16. Click the Delete key.
17. You should now have your creepy white noise static effect in the television.
